TRAVEL REPORT
Major Field Trip and Seminars
Sept. 10 – 14, 2012
Manila
Field
Trip Overview
Our
Major Field Trip and Seminar in Manila was on September 10-14, 2012, it only
last for 5 days and 4 nights in Manila. Based on our itinerary on our travel
tours, we have lots of companies that we may visit around Metro Manila
especially in Quezon City and Makati. We have lots of fun during our tour in
Metro Manila especially malling in SM Mall of Asia, Trinoma, SM North Edsa, and
many more. But the most interesting part in our major field trip and seminar
was going to the large companies especially very well known companies in the
Philippines and very famous university in the Philippines. Learning so much in
this major field trip and seminar is a very fulfilling task because you learned
a lot with joyful in the heart and having fun because the memories installed in
the brains can never be forgotten because of the unique experiences in the
individual lives.
Day
1
Our
major field trip and seminar starts on the day of September 10, 2012. When we
arrive in the Manila International Airport, we are immediately picked up by the
Maynilad Tours and our class was separated into 2 groups, the one in the small
bus and the other is in the big bus. Then we immediately went to DOST office in
Bicutan in the morning and on the afternoon were in the MMDA in EDSA Makati. In
these two companies, I have learned a lot from the technologies they are using
and tools that keep their operations so effective.
In
our visit in DOST office, they introduce to us in their presentations there projects
and inventions that may help improved the lives of Filipino people. There are
lots project that are still on-going and some of them are for the farmers that
may help improved their crop production. Also inventions from the Filipino
inventors that is so amazing. I also learned in their presentation the concept
of IPv6 or Internet Protocol version 6 of Networking Technologies.
The
presenter discussed about the depleted IP address of IPv4 or Internet Protocol
version 4 because it is the version of IP addresses that is commonly used by
the machines that connected through networks worldwide. Because it was used by
many years since it was launch, the IPv4 nowadays has come to his end for the
reason that it has now limited IP addresses that can be used by the users in
the World Wide Web. That is why the DOST IT Department has come up with a
decision that they are the one or the first department in the Philippines that
implement the IPv6 in their networks so that if there is any company that wants
to convert set up a network using IPv6, the DOSY is ready on the service to
work or tutor a personnel on how to set up an IPv6 on the machine.
Also
the DOST department has a big project that is still on-going, called Project
Noah. The Project Noah was a proposed project of DOST to address the calamity
prone areas in the Philippines especially in
the part of National Capital Region (NCR) that are so flood-prone areas
when there is any tropical storms or any weather disturbance that occur. The
Project Noah was a web site based monitoring of the areas where you can see the
weather conditions, the earthquake prone areas because you can see the fault
line formations in that area. They implement it in the web site so that all
people who can use internet could check easily the conditions that happened in
their area. For this project to be successful and have an accurate
representation of the conditions that is happening in all the areas in the Philippines,
DOST have a collaboration with the PAG-ASA so that they can easily change the
weather patterns that enveloped in the specific place or areas affected.
This
Project Noah was so big and still on-going for the reason that the geologists
have still not completed plotting the fault lines in whole Philippines because
of its complicated areas and formations. Still the Project Noah is a very
brilliant idea of DOST in helping the Filipino citizens monitor their area if
in case there is any calamities that happened in their place. This Project Noah
is plotting a map area of the flood prone places in Metro Manila because of its
unsolvable problem of flood. The Project Noah could detect where areas are
heavily flooded in times raining or a storm and the team of PAG-ASA or DOST
could warn the citizens before any accidents happen.
In
the office of MMDA, what I have learned there is that there tools or technology
is very much advanced compared to Davao City’s traffic management. Their
cameras have used a fiber optic CCTV cameras and that is why the data sent to
the traffic management office is very much faster and accurate. There are so
many installed CCTV cameras in their important roads or vital roads in Metro
Manila. Their cameras can zoom in for 40 times of the image compared to CCTV
cameras in Davao City that can only zoom in 20 times of the image. Their
installed cameras is very useful in traffic management for the reason that they
could see the traffic roads where there have a heavy load of traffic of the
vehicles. And also they used it for the disaster prevention especially floods,
fire, and other calamities and they can respond quickly when they detect any
emergency situations. The MMDA show to us their videos of accidents like
crashed vehicles, people hit by a 10-wheeler truck, and minored criminals caught
by the cameras when they snatch a taxi driver and escaped through jumping in
the LRT railways.
What I have liked while we are visiting in
DOST office is there well presented projects and inventions by the Filipino inventors
because lots of projects and inventions are very useful in the lives of people
but the ordinary citizens didn’t recognize it.
In
the visitation in MMDA office, I liked their technologies and devices used in
their operations in traffic management and disaster prevention because they
have an advance equipment compared in PSCC in Davao City.
What
I didn’t like in our company visit is the location of MMDA because it is very
hot and I feel like we are scorch under the sun even we are in the shades of
the building. And in the DOST office is their room which is full of dusts.
Day
2
In our 2nd day of major
field trip and seminar, we went to University of the Philippines Diliman Campus
for our 10th Youth Congress of the Philippines or Y4IT that was held in UP
Diliman Campus. The Youth for Congress in UP Diliman was held in Bahay ng
Alumni and UP Theatre. The different venue has also different topics and
different presenters, and Mr. Randy Gamboa had a speech in Bahay ng Alumni. His
speech was only the introductory speech for the presentation of Bahay ng Alumni
and Mr. Gamboa acknowledge us from University of Southeastern Philippines
students. We visited there in UP Diliman for a whole day. In the morning, we
are in Bahay ng Alumni and in the afternoon in UP Theatre. The topics presented
in Bahay ng Alumni were animation, blogger, presentation, and many more. There
are lots of topics and discussion about the latest technologies.
In the UP Theater, there are lots of
interesting topics those presenters discussed especially the thesis for the deaf.
She discussed how the development of that study has benefit lots of children in
learning how to speak using a tool to memorize all the pronounce words so that
they can practice their tongue with barely difficult hearing the sounds. It
amazed me because the presenter hears to us an example of a child speaking the
word apple but the spoken word is not that accurate. But the result of their education
and experimentation had come to its fulfillment because a child can speak a
word in nearly 99 percent accuracy of pronouncing the word.
Also in UP Theater, a presenter also
discussed about the importance of Business Process Outsourcing or BPO in our
economy and for the IT people because it gives us opportunities of enhancing
our skills through creating projects through software management. The presenter
discussed how important a software management in software development because
the system itself needs to have a systematic of solving the problem. The
developer itself must organize themselves in systematic way. The Business
Process Outsourcing is growing more in the Philippines in the field of IT world
because the companies saw the potential of IT people in competing to others
globally. That is why BPO companies are showing in the market like a mushroom.
What I like in the University of the
Philippines visit is their place in Quezon City because the area was so large
and the campus has a public jeepney transportation that roamed around in the UP
Diliman Campus that makes the people there go around in the university campus
in a convenient way. I also like the souvenir shop inside the UP Diliman campus
because the products shows all the symbols and emblem of UP but their products
are quite expensive.
In Bahay ng Alumni, the only topic
that catches my attention and interest is about animation and the future of
animation here in the Philippines. The presenter shows to us a sample video on
how a Filipino animator can do and can compete in the world of animation
worldwide. Even though the popularity of Filipino animation is not that
recognizable because of foreign influence of animation especially in Japanese
animation.
What I didn’t like in our visitation
in UP Diliman is we feel like the topics are very boring.
Day
3
On the day of September 12, 2012, our
third day of major field trip and seminar. We had a company visit in
Philippines Long Distance Telephone or PLDT in Mandaluyong, Manila. We had a
visit there in the morning and in the afternoon in the Social Security System
main branch. In the Philippine Long Distance Telephone, they introduce to us
their devices and technologies used in their operations.
We first had a forum in their
operations manager which she discussed about the operations of PLDT in the
whole Philippines, event in the part of the provinces. And she discuss on how
they acquire the Smart communications company as their wireless technology
partner. They toured us in their history booth of the PLDT Company. After the
forum and discussion of the company’s history in their history booth, they led
us in the 5th floor of the building where the Acer Company’s staffs
are going to have product presentation of their latest gadgets and
technologies.
The Acer present to us their latest
durable notebook laptops that resembles like in the Dell laptops that made of
carbon that protects the hardware and very sensitive parts of laptops from
damage due to hard fall of the ground, shock, and many more. The name of the
their new durable notebook is the Acer 8481 notebook and they try to convince
us their product when they try Mr. Gamboa and Mr. Manseras to step the notebook
on the floor and jump. But when we request to fall in the ground, they refuse
to grant our request because after testing of jumping on the laptop, it is
hardly switch on.
In the Social Security System main
branch, they discussed about the system of SSS and their programs for the house
maids. Their new program wants to implement the membership of the house maids
as a SSS member and have a minimum wage allowance of 2000-3000 per month for
their benefit.
Day
4
On the day of September 13, 2012, our
fourth day of our major field trip and seminar. We had a company visit in SPI
Global in Parañaque. We spent a half of the day in our SPI Global company
visit. SPI Global has a brand name Solutions, People, and Innovations that
speaks about their role as a Business Process Outsourcing Company or BPO but
that brand name is not the real meaning of their company name. The presenter
gives us a very good presentation about their company and their profile. They
introduced to us their types of work and department head personnel of their
company. They discussed about the BPO or Business Process Outsourcing label in
their company and how they provide services to their clients. Business Process
Outsourcing is the brand of their company because they provide services to
their client in different kinds of services. They discussed their services they
provide just like software development. Every department in their company has personnel
that present to us their type of work and their usual job in the company. They
introduced to us their programmers and software developers. They present to us
their type of works and their ideas about the software they developed. The
programmer didn’t show to us the real application of their program. They also
discussed to us the different software development life cycles and explained on
how important it is that related in their work. The presenter made a relation
on the software development life cycle and the real software and they are
developing. And they realized to us that even though you have a perfect
programmers and software developers, if they cannot follow on time on the
deadlines that was stated in their software development life cycle, the project
will fall into futility. We also had a question and answer portion on their
programmers and they admitted that they usually fail on meeting on the deadline
that their clients set to them and that is why they usually scolded by their
manager.
The software developers also
discussed on what type of software they are using in their company and they
have a partnership with the Microsoft Company to provide them the necessary
tools and IDEs they can use. The complete licensed Enterprise edition of software
costs about 500 million pesos.
They also have lots of network
administrators in the SPI Global and their presentation gives us the real
application of networking in their company. They discussed to us the topology
of the networks that installed in their buildings and how they implement the
security issues in their network. They tackle about the devices they usually
used in their network especially the fiber optics. They hand down and passed to
us the fiber optic cable, I amazed how much thinner the fiber optic compared to
UTP cable that usually used in the network.
Day
5
On the day of September 14, 2012, on
our fifth and final day of our major field trip and seminar. We had a company
visit in JP Morgan Chase located in Fort Bonifacio. Fort Bonifacio was like
mini-Makati in their business district because part of the Fort Bonifacio was
converted into business center and they have very tall rising buildings that
amazed me so much. The JP Morgan Chase has a very tall building that located in
the center of Fort Bonifacio. Their company is very accommodating to the people
that want to enter in their premises because their cafeteria has a free
unlimited drinks with different drinks offered from coffee to soft drinks and
from hot to cold drinks. Because of our curiosity, we try the different
variants of drinks in the slot machines.
Their manager had toured us in the
whole building of JP Morgan Chase and Corporation and explained to us the
different purpose of the rooms. Their building has a meditation room for their
employees who have different beliefs or religions because they implement a rule
for religious intolerance for their employees. Everyone can use the meditation
room anytime, and every floor levels in their building have a cafeteria that
has free drinks. After the tour, we discussed about the JP Morgan Chase and
Corporation and their history. The owner of JP Morgan is a very wealthy person
and a gem collector that collected only unique gems. The profit of the company
in a week is about 1 billion dollars compared to BPI that they got a profit of
1 billion in one year. It is clearly said that JP Morgan and Chase has world
dominance over banking and finance. They also have a charity work over the
community and a team building in their employees.
Appendix
Recommendation
My recommendation for those who take
Field Trip and Seminars next year or on the future years is that they must be
responsible for any actions and decisions they must take. They must choose a
good leader that can understand every member in the class, not just their own
class because the students enrolled in the Field Trip and Seminars has
different schedules in the other subjects. The leader you must choose knows how
to listen in their sovereignty because some leaders don’t want to listen on the
opinions of others. You must choose a leader who has a firm decision and don’t
make any big changes on the critical times.
